Bulimba Courtyard
Conditions Builder's debris, Clay soil, Weed removal, Narrow access, Partial shade
Brief

“Make this space liveable again” – Once the powercoat fence went in, the tiny front yard was completely neglected, but not forgotten. A constant annoyance to the client and her family, this space would need a complete makeover.

This was an addition to the scope of the Bulimba Backyard; the client had been using the garage as main entrance in embarrassment of her entry courtyard. We removed the clump of Agave attenuata, buried builder’s waste, remains of a path, and grass (mostly weeds, in fact). Making use of the neighbours’ Dypsis lutescens (Golden Canes) as shade, we planted Rhapis excelsa and a host of foliage plants, including a Rhopalostylis sapida from the client’s native New Zealand. The heliconias will eventually create more shade (and privacy), with a canopy of feathery ferns on the gate side. Salvaged white gravel creates a space for table & chairs, rounding out the makeover.
