Hidden behind a modern townhouse in Hawthorne, this tiny space was in need of some serious work. The client wanted to transform his little 'field of weeds' into a smart, lush outdoor entertaining and relaxation space. A lap pool, small deck, staircase up to another deck, and the bulk of the house all competed to limit opportunities for access. With the request for a full-size fire pit, a paved area, and a lush tropical display garden, our designer was challenged to see the project from multiple angles.

Small, slow-growing palms will form a low canopy as the garden matures, with bromeliads, calatheas and others forming a rich understory full of visual interest. A large glazed urn and Dwarf mondo grass between volcanic pavers give the courtyard a Balinese vibe. Gingers, heliconias and Tree Ferns will grow quickly to create a lush environment while the slower species mature.
